Education:
Post-Doc 1978 University of Saskatchewan, Canada, College of Medicine, Neuroscience
PhD 1975 McMaster University, Canada, Division of Medical Science, Teratology
M.Sc. 1971 Acadia University, Canada, College of Science, Developmental Biology
B.Sc. 1969 Acadia University, Canada, College of Science, Biology/Chemistry

Research Interests:

  • The role of oxidative stress and inflammation in diseases of aging (e.g., hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dementia) and following trauma, in particular brain & spinal cord injury as well as stroke.
  • Dietary and pharmacological approaches to decrease oxidative stress and associated problems, with special interest in dietary compounds that can increase the expression of anti-oxidant genes (i.e., phase 2 protein genes).
  • Identification and characterization of dietary phase 2 protein inducers.
  • Overcoming drug and radiation resistance in cancer cells.
  • Understanding the bases for cellular toxicity in nanomaterials.
  • Novel ways of imaging cells in vivo using synchrotron x-rays.
  • Novel mechanisms of x-ray-mediated cell damage.

Current projects:

   Funded:

  • “Discovery and characterization of plant-derived phase 2 protein inducers”. B.H.J. Juurlink (PI), Jon Page and Jim Johnstone. Funding by a National Sciences & Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada’s Collaborative Health Program grant. This project not only identifies new plant-derived phase 2 protein inducers but is also attempting to convert a crucifer weed into a functional food.
  • “Research and Community Alliance for Quality of Life in Long Term Care (The QOL Team)”. This is a team grant headed by Thomas Hadjastravropoulis that is examining interventions that lead to healthier life style in the elderly. Dr. Juurlink’s part in this, together with Susan Whiting, is to determine whether increased vitamin D3 intake and flax lignan intake decreases problems associated with oxidative stress and inflammation in elderly living in long-term care homes. Funded by the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation (SHRF).
  • “The effects of Troglitazone on histone metabolism in multiple drug resistant breast cancer”. Troy A.A. Harkness (PI) and B.H.J. Juurlink. Funded by the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Active Research Projects with Minimal Funding:

  • Using gold nanoparticles to track brain cancer cell metastasis using synchrotron-generated x-rays.
  • Light production following X-ray interaction with tissue.
  • Understanding the bases of toxicity of carbon nanotubes and asbestos.

Research Grants Awarded:

  • KACST –Annual Research / Grants Program, Bernhard H.J. Juurlink (PI) and Ali A. Khraibi. “Phase 2 Protein Induction, Sirt1 and Gluconeogenesis”.
  • KACST –Annual Research / Grants Program, Ali A. Khraibi (PI), Wesam Kurdi, Bernhard H.J. Juurlink. “Renal and Cardiovascular Adaptations to Hypertensive Pregnancy”.
