Mr. Rezaul Haque, Technical Manager from Dyrup Company visited College of
Engineering at Alfaisal University on Sunday, 17th January, 2010 and gave a
talk to the students and faculty as part of the Executive Lecture Series
held by the College of Engineering.
Mr. Haque explained about importance and the criticality of the subject of
corrosion. Corrosion costs about 4% of National Production Income of Saudi
Arabia due to shutdowns, loss of production, contamination, over-design,
high operation cost, poor quality products, safety, etc. As most of the
industrial and public properties are built using metal as a dominant
material, corrosion becomes a subject of high importance and concern.
Approximately one ton of steel is converted to rust because of corrosion
every 90 seconds.
Mr. Haque talked about the crucial role played by engineers in the
prevention of corrosion and that engineers must also consider corrosion as
an important factor along with strength, reliability, cost and safety.
With over an hour of knowledge based interaction, the students learned about
different types of corrosion, their mechanisms and methods of prevention
used by the industry. The presentation consisted of examples of various
forms of corrosions and how they weaken and degrade metals. The presentation
also gave examples of corrosion control exercises.
The College of Engineering at Alfaisal University applies problem based
learning and advocates the importance of interaction with industry. As a
part of this belief, a series of executive lectures are held every week to
ensure continual knowledge transfer to the students.
