Dr. Rehan Ahmed
Professor of Mechanical Engineering
Curriculum Vitae
Dr. Rehan Ahmed completed his Masters and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from
Brunel University London
before joining the
University of Cambridge in 1999. He subsequently took tenured faculty
position at Heriot-Watt
University Edinburgh before joining
Alfaisal University in 2009.
Dr Rehan Ahmed leads multidisciplinary research in the areas of mechanics,
nanotechnology, mathematical and numerical modelling, surface engineering and
materials. He is ranked internationally as a leading author in the field of
surface coatings and fatigue. During the last decade, he has successfully
secured research grants with associated costs in excess of £1.7Million from
Industry and Research Councils to pursue his research. He serves on the
Editorial Boards of leading International Journals, member of the EPSRC
(Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) Review College and has been
the External PhD Examiner for a number of Universities in UK. He frequently
leads Industrial Consultancies on the basis of his expertise in his research
areas. He reviews scientific articles for some of the High Impact Factor
journals in his research field. Dr Ahmed has successfully supervised a number of
PhD and MPhil projects. He
also contributed to the ASM handbook on Failure Analysis and Prevention. He has
also been the recipient of Best Paper Awards at leading international
conferences and chaired sessions at international conferences. He has also acted
as a member of organising committee and scientific committee of major
international conferences. Dr Ahmed also recently filed a patent (pending) in
the field of orthopaedic implants.
Dr Rehan Ahmed has been involved with both graduate and undergraduate teaching
since 1996 and has the experience of both on-campus and distance learning
formats of delivery. These appointments have been at Brunel University,
Cambridge University, and Heriot-Watt University UK. Over the last two decades,
Dr Ahmed has been involved with computer based learning of students and took
part in the assessment of the process of introducing more advanced systems e.g.
clicker system to improve the motivation and learning experience of students at
Heriot-Watt University. He was the Subject Leader of the mechanics of materials
teaching group (solid mechanics) at Heriot-Watt University and was responsible
for ensuring that both the content and delivery mode of modules was consistent
with the requirements of student centred learning. As the Subject Leader, he
also had to ensure that the courses meet the Accreditation Requirements by the
IMechE (Institution of Mechanical Engineers), for which he also acts as the
Academic Liaison Officer at Heriot-Watt University. Dr Rehan Ahmed was also the
Director of Second Year Studies where he was responsible for all issues relating
to the delivery, assessment and quality of second year modules. He was also a
Module Leader for a number of graduate and undergraduate modules, and was the
Course Director for the MSc programme in Engineering Materials Design and
Applications at Heriot-Watt University.
