Undergraduate Curriculum

The College of Business offers a Bachelor of Science degree with concentrations in one or more of the following areas: Accounting, Finance, General Business, Marketing, and Project Management.

Accounting Concentration

Accounting may be the best route to a successful business career. It is considered the language of business, and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) summarized it best by saying that Accounting is “The One Degree with 360 Degrees of Possibilities.” The field of accounting has changed dramatically in response to such explosive trends as the computer revolution, increased government regulations, frequent tax law changes, the globalization of business, and the on-going downsizing and restructuring of enterprises. Accountants have assumed a more prestigious role of controllers, financial experts, system professionals, management consultants, budget analysts, and company auditors. More CEOs have undergraduate or graduate degrees in accounting than any other area of study. In this increasingly complex and competitive business environment, accounting skills are very much in demand and accounting has become a dynamic career. It is also associated with relatively higher remuneration.

The demand for accountants appears to be growing and outstripping supply and the job opportunities for accountants in today's business climate is better than ever, particularly so for women. As an accounting graduate, you may enter public accounting, private industry or pursue a career in government or not-for-profit organizations.

Finance Concentration

Never has there been a more appropriate time to study finance. Alfaisal University, College of Business offers a concentration in Finance which aims to provide students with a theoretical and practical understanding of the fundamental principles of finance. It introduces students to evaluation models that are used by finance practitioners to evaluate assets and investments. Students will start with the basic principles of time value of money. This will lead to valuing bonds and shares and understanding the role they play both in the firm and in the market place.
Students will learn how a financial manager evaluates a project taking into consideration the cost of funding the project and the risk associated with the project. Students will also develop an understanding of the nature of the firm, its objectives and the ethical implications of these objectives. The concentration covers six core units: Principles of Finance, Managerial Finance, Corporate Finance, Financial Markets and Institutions, Investments, and Islamic Banking and Finance.

Marketing Concentration

The marketing concentration provides students with an analytical and comprehensive understanding of marketing. Students will be able to generate, analyze, interpret, and present marketing information that firms and other organizations need to satisfy and keep customers through the development of innovative products and services, which build brand equity and provide excellent return on investment.

Graduating students will be able to use a wide range of practical and up-to-date marketing tools and techniques. They will be able to utilize information, and knowledge to support innovation in a wide range of organizations including business, non-profit organizations, and government entities.

Project Management Concentration

With increasingly competitive businesses environments, corporations are relying on project managers to achieve strategic goals through effective management of innovative solutions. To achieve this target, many organizations adopting business-based project management approach and methodologies to manage and deliver these solutions through projects. This triggered high demand for experienced project managers with knowledge in project management frameworks, lifecycles, processes, tools, and techniques.

A business degree with project management concentration will develop the competence of our graduates and equip them with required skills to plan, control, execute, and manage all project management attributes for successful delivery of the scope, in a timely manner and within budget. With such skills, our graduates are qualified to work in virtually all industries both in public and private sectors.

Coursework is centered in three areas:

  • First, in common with other students at Alfaisal University, Business students take a series of general education courses that provide breadth to their overall education. These courses benefit Alfaisal Business students by providing them with a broader perspective on the interaction between business activities and the natural and human environment in which those activities take place. Such education allows Alfaisal students to move quickly beyond entry level managerial and professional positions to higher managerial positions which require a more complete understanding of broader social issues.
  • Second, all Business students take a set of core business courses that familiarize them with the variety of activities undertaken within most companies. Through this introduction to Marketing, Management, Finance, Accounting, Operations Management, and other aspects of business Alfaisal students learn the language of business in a way that allows them to operate effectively across functional boundaries. This critical skill has become even more important in the current global business environment where cross-functional teams have become the norm. The core business courses prepare students for a wide variety of entry level management and professional positions in any of the core business areas.
  • Third, Alfaisal Business students select one or more concentrations from Accounting, Finance, General Business, Marketing, and Project Management. Additional concentrations will be added as the student body grows and may include such areas as international Business, Entrepreneurship and Human Resource Management. These course concentrations provide depth in one or more of the core business functions. While students with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business are well prepared for a wide variety of entry level management and professional positions due to their core business courses, concentration courses prepare them to make a more advanced contribution in a specific functional area.
