Norman Swazo, Ph.D.
Interim/Acting Dean, College of Science & General Studies
Curriculum Vitae
Dr. Norman K. Swazo currently serves as the Interim/Acting Dean of College of
Science & General Studies as well as Professor of Philosophy and Biomedical
Ethics. He specializes in ethics in international affairs, including ethical
issues in international health research, and recent European philosophy. He
holds the PhD in Philosophy (1988) and a Graduate Certificate in Global Policy
Studies (1987), from the University of Georgia; a Master of Health Services
Administration (MHSA) degree from the University of Michigan School of Public
Health (1978); and a Bachelor of Arts degree (magna cum laude) in Science and
Human Affairs from Princeton University (1976). He taught previously in the USA
at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (14 years), Kansas State University (1
year), the University of the South (1 year), and Springfield College (1 year).
He also served as Consultant with the Pan American Health Organization/World
Health Organization in Washington DC, with country-level assignments in the
Caribbean and Honduras (1978-1981), as well as the Office of International
Health, U.S. Public Health Service (summer 1978).
He is the author of Crisis Theory and World Order: Heideggerian Reflections
(SUNY Press, 2002) and numerous publications in professional journals, e.g.,
Journal of the British Society for Phenomenology, International Studies in
Philosophy, International Journal on World Peace, Public Affairs Quarterly,
Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, the Internet Journal of Law, Healthcare, and
Ethics, the Yale Journal for Humanities in Medicine, and the Journal of
Philosophy, Science, and Law.
Most recently Professor Swazo has published in the American Journal of Islamic
Social Sciences, and served as the journal’s Co-Editor of a Special Issue on
Islamic Ethics. An article on stem cell research ethics was recently published
in the journal, Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics. A paper on the Saudi
position in global climate change negotiations was recently published in the
Middle East Review of International Affairs.
Professor Swazo presented a paper at the 5th International Congress of the
International Society for the History of Islamic Medicine, held in Istanbul
Turkey 25-28 October 2010. This paper is forthcoming in the Journal of the
International Society for the History of Islamic Medicine. Dr. Swazo was
recently a plenary speaker at an International Workshop on “Professional Ethics
in a Globalized World,” 11-12 May 2011, Texas A&M University-Qatar, Doha Qatar.
He will present a paper, on the topic of ethical issues concerning civilian use
of nuclear power in the Gulf Region, at the Symposium on Ethics of Environmental
Health, held 24-27 August 2011, in Prague Czech Republic.
Dr. Swazo serves as a member of the editorial board of the International Journal
on World Peace and was recently appointed a member of the Honorary Editorial
Board of the journal, Medicolegal and Bioethics.
